CMP Joined the "18% and Growing" Rally at City Hall

The 18% & Growing, a coalition comprised of all Asian community-based organizations in New York City, has been tirelessly advocating for increased city funding for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) serving Asian communities. Over the past decade, the coalition has grown from 13% & Growing to its current form, reflecting the Asian population now representing roughly 18% of the city's total. Despite this, CBOs serving Asian communities receive only about 3% of the city's funding for community services.

As a steering committee member, CMP has consistently been the largest presence at the annual rally at City Hall. This year, on May 16th, we proudly brought 65 of our students and staff, making up almost a third of the total attendees on the City Hall steps!

Community Outreach Efforts

On May 15th, CMP participated in a Job and Resource Fair. Hosted by University Settlement at 184 Eldridge St. 2nd floor, New York, NY 10002. Along with 12 other community partners, we provided one-on-one and small-group assistance to 100-plus job seekers. It was a fantastic opportunity to share available positions, training, classes, and workshops that CMP offers regularly and planned for the coming months.  We spent much-needed time answering questions and developing relationships with job seekers and our community partners.

Mental Health Wellness Training on December 9th

CMP, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Chinatown, successfully hosted a Mental Health Wellness Training on Saturday afternoon, December 9th. The primary goal of this event is to break the silence surrounding mental health issues and cultivate a supportive environment that empowers individuals not just to survive but to thrive. We were pleased to have 25 participants join us for this impactful session.

Tailored for the general public, including community organizations, businesses, and individuals, this training is designed to deepen participants' understanding of prevalent mental health issues. It equips them with practical coping mechanisms for handling negative emotions and stressors while guiding individuals toward available and suitable mental health treatments.

The training incorporated engaging brainstorming sessions, group discussions, and breathing exercises, ensuring an interactive and holistic learning experience. Attendees received informative flyers featuring essential details such as the 988 crisis lifeline, along with stress balls to help them cope with difficult times. Lunch was provided to create a comfortable platform for participants to share and learn.

This special event will highlight the lives of two legendary giants, Corky Lee and Geoff Lee, who impacted the voices of the Asian American & Pacific Islander community through their work in film, music and photography. By sponsoring this event, CMP hopes that this tribute event will inspire others in the community to pursue their dreams and for the betterment of our community.

About Corky Lee and Geoff Lee:

Corky Lee was a well-known and well-regarded photojournalist, and social justice activist who documented Asian American history from the mid-70s until his death in 2021. He was a member of the American Legion (a U.S. Veteran Association), OCA, and Asian American Journalist Association. His work can be viewed in news media, films, television, and museums. His legacy continues to inspire others to fight for justice and equality.

Geoff Lee was a Chinese American musician and actor. He taught at Project Reach in New York’s Chinatown. He later returned to the rock music scene by joining The Heat, as a bassist and composer, playing at venues including CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. Geoff was a community activist, and a member of Hamilton Madison House, a multi-social services agency. His acting career spanned over 60 roles, including Off-Broadway, film, and television projects before passing away in 2022 from cancer.
