2024 Small Business Bootcamp Successfully Concluded

CMP successfully concluded the 30th Small Business Bootcamp, a comprehensive 10-week entrepreneurship program!

A total of 23 students enrolled in the program, gaining valuable insights into business concepts and skills, including business formation, taxes, marketing strategies, and more. Participants also received expert advice and practical information to support their journey toward building successful businesses.

CMP BOC Joined the NYC Small Business Month Expo

On May 29th, NYC Small Business Services hosted its first-ever NYC Small Business Month Expo to address the needs of small business owners. CMP Business Outreach Center (BOC) was excited to participate, offering face-to-face Q&A sessions and sharing information about our CMP classes and programs.

On March 27th, CMP hosted a workshop on “How to Start a Business”. This workshop was designed to equip entrepreneurs with the knowledge, tools, and resources required to start and grow a successful business. Participants had the opportunity to learn business concepts and skills, as well as strategies for business growth and expansion.

"Work for Yourself@50+" Workshop for Flushing Community

On March 7th and April 23rd, CMP, in collaboration with AARP Foundation and Flushing YMCA, organized a "Work for Yourself@50+" workshop for the Flushing community. This workshop was designed to assist older adults in understanding the ins and outs of self-employment and entrepreneurship. 34 participants attended the workshop and received valuable business information and resources for starting a successful business. 

Selling at Street Fairs and Night Markets Webinar

On Wednesday, March 20th, CMP, in partnership with Chinatown YMCA, hosted a workshop titled "Selling at Street Fairs and Night Markets," aimed at guiding aspiring entrepreneurs. We covered the necessary licenses and permits, vendor application procedures, and booth reservations, providing valuable insights on business setup and customer attraction. Following this, on April 17th, we conducted a Mandarin-language webinar that saw an impressive turnout of over 50 participants from the Chinese community.

Selling at Street Fairs and Night Markets Webinar

CMP’s Business Outreach Center is excited to announce a FREE webinar titled "Selling at Street Fairs and Night Markets." This webinar is designed to provide guidance on starting an entrepreneurial journey in street fairs and night markets.

Topics to be covered include the licenses and permits required for selling goods and food items at street fairs and night markets, the procedures for applying to become a vendor and reserving a booth, as well as key considerations for setting up your booth and attracting customers.

Business Entity Formation and Partnership Agreements Webinar

CMP, in collaboration with the Asian American Bar Association of New York, organized the "Business Entity Formation and Partnership Agreements" webinar on March 28th. The webinar was conducted in both English and Chinese. Experienced attorneys discussed the legal aspects of establishing a business and shared insights about partnership agreements and building a successful business partnership. 17 Participants attended and benefited from this interactive workshop.  

CMP, in collaboration with the Asian American Bar Association of New York, is proud to present the "Business Entity Formation and Partnership Agreements" webinar. The event is scheduled for Thursday, March 28th, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Zoom, and it will be conducted in both English and Mandarin Chinese. Experienced attorneys will address the legal aspects of establishing a business and discuss why robust partnership agreements are crucial for a successful business partnership. Erika Chou combines her love of the restaurant industry with her background in fine arts, interior design, and branding. She brings her many talents to bear as an owner and operator after first gaining experience in the fashion industry, before working her way up the ranks of Andre Balazs’ Standard Grill and the Gotham City Hospitality Group. In 2012, she embarked on her own with the debut of Yunnan Kitchen, one of the first regional Chinese restaurants in NYC. Three years later, her sophomore project opened in the World Trade Center after which she founded Rivers and Hills Hospitality Group. Today, the group, deemed “a hit maker” by Eater, includes concepts like powerhouse Wayla, James Beard Nominee Kimika, along with Wan Wan, JIA, Bronson’s Burgers, and Lotus + Cleaver.

Along the way, Erika has been recognized as a leading female entrepreneur in the Food & Beverages industry by Cherry Bombe, The New York Times, and listed in the Hospitality News Watchlist of 15. A particularly notable feature was being named one of three pioneers of Chinese cuisine in America with a front-page feature by the New York Times. Her projects have been spotlighted in The New Yorker, Grubhub, Eater, Vogue, Louis Vuitton City Guide, The Infatuation, Bon Appetit, James Beard Foundation, and more.

In the past few years, Erika has pivoted by going back to her design roots and became a partner at the interior design firm, Bespoke Only. She has since then left to focus on her family and is very excited for what’s to come.

Work for Yourself Workshop on December 6th

Larry, our Director of the Entrepreneurship Department, conducted an engaging Work for Yourself Workshop for one of our ALP classes, comprising 20 students. This specialized workshop is designed to empower seniors with the knowledge and resources needed to embark on the journey of self-employment.

During the workshop, Larry covered a range of topics, including the potential benefits and risks associated with working for oneself, generating creative business ideas, understanding the costs involved, and offering valuable guidance to help participants avoid pitfalls and scams. Additionally, the session provided access to trustworthy support systems and services essential for those considering self-employment.
