Magazine Fever Exhibition at MOCA on October 2nd

Please Save the Date for the VIP Preview and Reception of ‘Magazine Fever: Gen X Asian American Periodicals’ at Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA, 215 Center Street, New York, NY 10013) on Wednesday, October 2nd, from 6-8PM.

Surveying over 80 rare back issues and historical documentation dating from the late ’60s to early 2000s, Magazine Fever presents stories of Generation X magazines–how they were founded and sustained; how they were connected to their more activist-minded predecessors; how they captured the essence of multiculturalism and Generation X paradigms; and how they shaped the ways Asian American identity is understood today.

2024 SYEP Was Successfully Concluded

🎉 The curtain falls on an exceptional Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) hosted by CMP. In partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), we proudly supported 721 ambitious individuals aged 16-24 on their journey to career exploration and paid work experience. Our partnership extended to 167 dedicated worksite employers who played a crucial role in shaping this success story.

The success of this program was evident in the positive feedback received from both participants and worksite supervisors. Notably, the supervisor of the NYCHA Law Department told us that the candidates we sent excelled at the duties assigned. Participants at Melanin Serendip & Co. we interviewed all gave us positive feedback about the work they've been doing, saying they enjoy the work, and are glad these tasks have helped their professional growth and career development 💪

🤝 This success story was not unique, as many worksites expressed their keen interest in expanding our partnership to other internship programs, next year's SYEP, and our career development initiatives.

For inquiries or to learn about opportunities next summer, reach out to syep@cmpny.org or call (646) 292-9679. Here's to the bright paths these emerging talents will forge!

CMP's First HVAC Training Successfully Concluded on August 16th

CMP's first HVAC training with S&W Wilson, Inc. has come to a successful conclusion. At a graduation ceremony on Friday, August 16, CMP presented graduates with certificates of completion in recognition of their efforts and achievements.

Since the start of the course on May 22, the 3-month training not only allowed the students to practice their skills in a real HVAC work environment but also enhanced their market competitiveness through the work readiness courses provided by the CMP, such as the analysis of industry dynamics and training on interview skills, laying a foundation for their successful entry into the job market.

At the graduation ceremony, Stephanie Lau, Deputy Executive Director of CMP, said, “Today's graduation ceremony marks the end of an important learning journey for the students and the beginning of their new career.” Mr. Wilson Fung, the instructor and owner of S&W Wilson, Inc., also said that many of the students have made remarkable progress and will be recommended for relevant jobs.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) covers a wide range of services for indoor environmental comfort and air quality. Since the career information session last December, CMP has recognized the high interest of the community in the knowledge and skills of the industry. In response, CMP covered the full cost of all materials and equipment and set the registration fee at just $100—over 90% below the market rate—to reduce barriers and enable more aspiring individuals to enter the field.

This training marks the CMP's first vocational training program since the loss of the original classroom space due to the 2020 fire. CMP continues to innovate and improve the quality of its services to help community members achieve economic independence and career dreams.

CMP Joined the "18% and Growing" Rally at City Hall

The 18% & Growing, a coalition comprised of all Asian community-based organizations in New York City, has been tirelessly advocating for increased city funding for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) serving Asian communities. Over the past decade, the coalition has grown from 13% & Growing to its current form, reflecting the Asian population now representing roughly 18% of the city's total. Despite this, CBOs serving Asian communities receive only about 3% of the city's funding for community services.

As a steering committee member, CMP has consistently been the largest presence at the annual rally at City Hall. This year, on May 16th, we proudly brought 65 of our students and staff, making up almost a third of the total attendees on the City Hall steps!
